Montreat, North Carolina, is not only home to a Presbyterian college and conference center; it’s also a nature preserve and sanctuary for rare wildlife—which tend to make their presence known!
Photographer Mike Erdelyi captured a stunning Mandarin duck (aix galericulata) on the Montreat stream (headwaters of the Swannanoa River) in the winter of 2010. The following summer, staffer Wil Wilson found the duck again:
