The Next Greatest Thing

I hold myself in a state of constant limbo
Waiting for the next greatest thing
Denying myself even the simplest pleasure
Until something extraordinary comes along
To pick me off my feet

I don’t care for reading,
The great debate

I don’t go in for politics
Or religion
Or whatever people talk about

I don’t relax with a cold one
And enjoy the all-star game

I just go on waiting,
Sticking to the same endless routine
Always waiting
For the next greatest thing.

  1. I think this is a sad poem because each moment, no matter how big or small or exciting or not, is equally important. The next greatest thing is enjoying the daily routine.
